One of the best things a writer, director, or producer can do is maintain a clear vision of the project. When you start, create a simple, concrete statement of how the finished piece should come out (structure/theme/mood/whatever) and constantly refer back to it throughout production. It sounds cheesy, but it worked for Goldman and Reiner on The Princess Bride.
